Some are and some are not. There are some recent cartoons that are made for mature audiences such as Drawn Together and South Park. To some extent Ren and Stimpy were aimed at older audiences as well. Also alot of the cartoons appropriate for youngsters have some humor that is a bit grown up (ex. The CL episode Beanies and Weenies had some about "buns").

I think it all depends on the person more than the actual show itself. I know a lot of people who get a kick out of Dora the Explorer who are over the age 20, and kids that are like 8 years old and understand a show like Family Guy completely. I think it more derives from ones sense of humor. Depending on what you think is funny, you'll more than likely watch something that fits just that. Heck, I understood all the jokes of The Simpsons when I was 7.
I believe people only call cartoons "childish" because of the stereotype that all cartoons are aimed at children ages 6-12 usually. I had a boyfriend once who believed this, and believed that cartoons, even ones with sophisticated back stories such as Codename: Kids Next Door, were only intended for children. This has changed however with the eve of new more adult cartoon series. Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Invader Zim, Where My Dogs At, etc. The list goes on.
As for me, I think my humor comes from the fact that I like all types of humor (except humor coming from Napoleon Dynamite). I also respect the writers of a show as well. It takes dedication and hard work to come up with comical material.
That's my two-cents.

There are various cartoons that face for the mature audience. South Park, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Drawn Together, 12 oz Mouse, Robot Chicken, and various others. Also, the opinion of a cartoon being childish is the opinion of the person. Many have different views. Some view cartoons like Camp Lazlo or Foster's as childish but some will view them hilarious. As Sanna mention, there are cartoons that include mature material in cartoons that target younger audience (various like Spongebob , Rocko's Modern Life and various others).

No way some shows like that are shown on Comedy Central and Adlut Swim are more for the older viewers. Some shows on CN, Nick, Disney, etc. are more for everyone. Some shows like Spongebob, Camp Lazlo, and Rocko's Modern Life have more adult humor mixxed together with child humor which makes it hilarious.

Well, I like cartoons, but there are some I call guilty pleasure cartoons. (I still watch some of the young kids stuff on PBS from time to time.) Some are still childish (I look at the stuff on Tickle U right now and shudder) but that doesn't mean it's childish.

I don't think cartoons are childish (well, not the ones I watch...), but I'm afraid other ppl that I might know (like in a workplace) do think they are...

Anyone who calls cartoons childish has obviously never heard of Beavis and Butthead. Or anime, for that matter. A lot of the anime meant for older ages is, in fact, even more disgusting than any R-rated movie could ever be.

Cartoons back in the 1930s and 40s weren't childish.. they were aimed towards adults (think Warner Bros). There are a lot more cartoons in our day that are for younger kids, like Care Bears... but cartoons can now fit into any age category. So, really, it depends on what cartoons you're looking at.

Actually, that happens a lot. Many cartoons targeted to younger viewers appeal too teens. For example, in my school, many people know many cartoons like The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy, Spongebob, The PowerPuff Girls, even there are some people that enjoy Dora! I know there are also adults too.
Older cartoons seemed more different. For one, they were more violent at some. For example, Tom & Jerry. Bugs Bunny may had some violence (use of guns, for example). Maybe the cartoons seemed childish to some because maybe the issue of some people thinking that kids watching it may get the wrong idea. Then cartoons targeted for their age had been made, making some people believe that cartoons have gone childish.

For this I have to be on both sides of this. There are many "childish" cartoons such as Blue's Clues or Dora the Explorer. At the same time there are cartoons directed towards an older audience like South Park and Family Guy. Finally, there are cartoons that all ages can enjoy, like Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends, and of course, Camp Lazlo.
